RCPC-organized effort to improve the dark and unfriendly space under the BART tracks/freeway on College Avenue. BART representatives were supportive. Ideas included paint, lighting, seating, art, kiosks, and vendors. A development meeting was scheduled January 9 at Temescal Library.
The UnderBART committee, formed after a December 2002 RCPC forum, is developing plans to transform the dark space under the Rockridge BART station on College Avenue into a vibrant public plaza with improved signage, lighting, gardens, seating, and community gathering areas. The committee has established a vision statement and goals and is seeking community input.
The UnderBART committee detailed an extensive list of improvement goals for the College Avenue BART station, including transit signage, neighborhood maps, educational gardens, improved lighting, a plaza with community meeting space, and artistic elements. BART's seismic department presented plans for an upcoming retrofit of the Rockridge station, potentially beginning 2005–2006, with the committee invited into design decisions.
The UnderBART Committee was pursuing improvements to the area around the Rockridge BART station, including a large central plaza, community garden, improved lighting and surfacing under the tracks, and public art. Mentioned briefly in the RCPC Board Openings section as an RCPC product.
The UnderBART Committee, in its first anniversary year, had developed a vision statement and specific projects: a large central plaza between Keith Street and the BART station, improved undertrack space with new surfacing and lighting, and a community garden on the north side of the station. Funding searches were underway with support from BART, CalTrans, City of Oakland, and Councilmember Brunner's office.
The RCPC 2005 agenda listed development of the UnderBART area (under the Rockridge BART station) as a key priority for the coming year, following land use planning work begun in 2004.
