The city granted the old Merritt College Building a reprieve from demolition, deciding to conform to historical review guidelines mandated by HUD funds. RCPC endorsed renovation and utilization of the existing building as an integral part of any development on the site.

A proposed mixed-use shopping center/office building/housing complex with all new structures on the site of the old Merritt College Building. The Ad Hoc Committee to Save the Old Merritt College Building was advocating for an alternative incorporating portions of the existing historic structure.
