College Preparatory School submitted a facilities master plan for about 20,000 sq ft of new construction over 10-15 years, including new classrooms and a theater building, with no planned increase in student population. RCPC and CPS co-sponsored a community meeting for review.
RCPC and CPS jointly sponsored a neighborhood meeting about the school's proposal to construct about 20,000 sq ft of classroom and theatre space over the next 10-15 years. The meeting was scheduled for May 6 on the CPS campus.
The RCPC board reviewed CPS's application at its May meeting and voted not to oppose it with conditions, but then learned of additional concerns from immediate neighbors. The comment period was extended to June 30. Contentious letters to the editor from neighbors and CPS head of school were published.
After discussions with CPS Head of School Murray Cohen and neighbors, RCPC sent a letter to the City outlining concerns and suggestions. RCPC continued working with the school and neighbors to reach a mutually acceptable plan.
City staff approved modifications to College Preparatory School's use permit to accommodate a capital improvements master plan including a new performing arts center and several new classroom buildings. Plans were modified and conditions added to address neighbor concerns.
A group of neighbors on streets surrounding College Preparatory School have appealed the City's decision amending the school's use permit to increase enrollment and allow additional buildings on campus. Neighbors argue the project should have required CEQA environmental review and that the approved project is too large and intrusive. RCPC is considering whether to take a position.
