Early-stage community planning process to redesign the Rockridge BART plaza area. A town hall gathered community input on priorities. Funding from BART parking charges was being explored, and a committee was forming to work with an architect.
Funding confirmed from Councilmember Brunner for 10-12 benches as a near-term improvement. A committee was forming to work with an architect on longer-term plans including landscaping, real-time transit displays, and a kiosk. Multiple community organizations expressed interest in the redesign.
BART hired Level Four Studio to redesign the Rockridge Plaza at the base of the BART escalator, addressing community requests for more seating, a direct pedestrian path to BART, better lighting, and improved landscaping.
Preliminary design work for the Rockridge Plaza redesign has begun. RCPC is working with the College Avenue merchant's group and BART District staff on revisions including landscaping, paving, benches, bicycle parking, lighting, signage, and a possible business directory kiosk.
Preliminary design work for the Rockridge escalator plaza has begun and should be available for public review in a couple of months.
BART, RCPC, and RDA (Rockridge District Association) have jointly developed a plan to remodel the plaza area at the base of the escalator leading to the Rockridge BART station at College and Keith. BART has approved the design and is preparing to submit plans to bid. The nearly quarter-million-dollar project creates a public square with distinctive signage and a compass rose paving element.
BART will soon release bid documents for the redesign of the Rockridge BART station plaza. BART is working with RDA and RCPC. BART seismic retrofit construction at Rockridge station was completed in late 2009; remaining column work near Claremont/Hudson scheduled for completion December 2010.

Features include a 'ridge of rock' stone installation spelling 'Rockridge' on College Ave side, serpentined concrete bench, native grasses/ferns, and a bronze compass rose. Funded by BART, City of Oakland (Councilmember Brunner's office), RDA/merchant donations, and RCPC funds.
The Rockridge BART Plaza redesign was put out to bid in May 2011, with bids due at the end of June. Landscape designer Greer Alley was involved. BART Board President Bob Franklin authored the article. The plaza is located at College and Keith Avenues.
A contract was awarded for renovation of the Rockridge BART Plaza. Construction was expected to begin around February 2012. RCPC board member Ann Winterman chaired a presentation on the project.
The renovation of the Rockridge BART Plaza is about to begin construction (around mid-April), nine years after being initially conceived. BART awarded the contract to Golden Bay Construction. The project replaces the ivy mound near the station escalator with a redesigned plaza featuring new benches, a compass rose medallion, Sierra Granite boulders, and improved lighting.
The BART Plaza renovation project is confirmed to be under construction as of the June issue, with a photo showing construction beginning at the redesigned plaza.
The Rockridge BART Plaza renovation project broke ground May 20. Golden Bay Construction is working on the project which replaces the mound of ivy near the base of the station escalator. About 30 percent of the planter was removed, boulders placed, and the compass rose art piece is complete awaiting installation. Expected to take about two months to complete.
