Election Notice

February Date
For RCPC 1991

Board Election

In February 1991, the Rockridge
Community Planning Council will hold
its annual election meeting. Directors
will be elected to fill five (5) seats on the
Board of Directors. Voting will com-
mence at 7:30 p.m. at the College Av-
enue Presbyterian Church, 5951 College
Avenue.

The polls will also be open on Satur-
day, February 16; the place and time are
announced on page two and will also be
printed in the January issue of The
Rockridge News.

Persons interested in board candi-
dacy should notify the RCPC Board of
Directors (c/o 5856 College Avenue,
Oakland, CA 94618) in writing —
either by letter or by using the statement
of intent form on page 2 — no later than
December 31, 1990 (or sent by certified
mail postmarked no later than December
27, 1990).

Candidates must be at least 18 years
of age, and must reside within the RCPC
boundaries. The boundary description 1s
specified in the organization’s by-laws
and was printed in the November Rockridge
News. The description willalso be printed
in the January issue of the newsletter. If
you have a question about your resi-
dency and your candidacy, call RCPC
Chair Brooke Levin at 653-7522.

City Council, District 1

New Mayor, Council

Discuss Priorities

Mayor-elect Elihu Harris and the City
Council held a joint retreat in November.
We compared priorities, articulated ex.-
pectations for the City and each other,
and shared disappointments. In many
ways, our goals are very similar. The
Mayor-elect’s priorities include traditional
areas of concern for the City such as
drugs and crime, housing, planning for
neighborhood revitalization, and cultural
and economic development. At its Sep-
tember annual retreat, the Council had
come up with a similar priority list. But
Mayor-elect Harris went further to em-
phasize education and illiteracy, envi-
ronmental planning, transportation poli-
cies, and creation of an office for health
and human services as necessary City of
Oakland concerms. Thechallenge before
all policy makers now is a matter of
approach and how to tackle City prob-
lems most effectively.

The next step will take place on Janu-
ary 4 and 5 the Mayor-elect and the
Council will sit down with City depart-
ment heads to take a look at the budget to
see how it can be shaped to accomplish
our mutual goals.

The new year promises to be exciting
and demanding. I hope 1991 will bring
Oakland closer to achieving the aspira-
tions we all share. Best wishes toeveryone
for a happy holiday season from all of us

in the Council office.
